"Summer in the City" Program Targets Young Professionals in Dayton

June 2007

Dayton-area employers can add value to student internships and expand business networks through the City of Dayton’s new “Summer in the City” program.

Initiated by City Commissioner Matt Joseph, Summer in the City will help bridge the gap between local businesses, college students, young professionals, and the Dayton community through weekly events allowing interns to experience some of the many professional, recreational, social, and cultural opportunities in Dayton.

The new program will allow participating interns to network with each other, local professionals and community leaders at business-sponsored “AfterWorks” gatherings. The “AfterWorks” will be held Tuesday evenings in June and July, each featuring free food and door prizes for attendees. Summer in the City also includes weekend activities, such as festivals, arts and entertainment, outdoor adventures, and Dayton Dragons games. The program provides participants with community service opportunities and an ID card allowing discounts at selected businesses. Generous assistance by local businesses, universities and other organizations has made this program possible.

“Our goal is for these activities to help keep talented graduates and young professionals in Dayton,” said Commissioner Joseph. “It will expose them to the many job opportunities available while showcasing the many interesting things to see and do here in Dayton. Our region is in desperate need of the talent and energy that they bring.”

Summer in the City begins with an “AfterWork” at Therapy Café on June 5 and concludes with a farewell celebration at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery on August 10, to which all sponsoring businesses and participating interns are invited.
