Microsoft SQL Server Code Name Katmai

July 2007

Situation
Microsoft has announced plans to release the next version of its Enterprise Database software, SQL Server “Katmai.”  This software is scheduled to be available in 2008.

Key Features
Software Development

SQL Server “Katmai” integrates with the .NET framework 3.0 providing a development environment with a higher level of abstraction for the data layer.

Tip: Leverage the following features to increase efficiency and accuracy in software development.

  • Disconnected devices can access a local data store and automatically synchronize with a central data store when they are connected to the network
  • Business Entities, like Person or Customer, may be defined instead of tables and columns by using the Entity Data Model
  • Query and retrieval of entities using the new LINQ
  • Developers work with the logical entity while administrators handle the physical storage through tables and other database structures.

Improved Platform
Improved security, scalability, and manageability lead to a system that is easier to maintain.
Tip: Use the following features to improve existing applications without the need to change the software

  • Encrypt data at the level of log files, data files, or the entire database
  • Improved auditing including knowledge of what data has been retrieved
  • Policy based management allowing the application of policies across many servers
  • Improved performance reporting comparing current statistics to stored baselines
  • Increased reliability through simplified recovery
  • Ability to add CPU and memory “on the fly.”

Non-Relational Data
SQL Server “Katmai” provides new data types for storage of diverse data types.  Unstructured data such as documents or images can be stored in the database.  New spatial data types allow for storage of geographical information.

Integration with Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office will be able to consume and author reports.  These reports may be shared throughout the company by direct submission to Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server.

Tip: The above features allow your department to integrate every-day applications into database monitoring and management
