The Kno.e.sis Center

May 2010

Last month, Wright State University introduced the Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge-Enabled Computing (Kno.e.sis).  The new center brings together the processes of three existing centers: daytaOhio, the Kno.e.sis Center and the Center for Healthy Communities.  Using a multidisciplinary approach, the center’s vision requires synergy between advanced computing, knowledge processing, visualization, and cognitive systems.  Wright State University officials have said that the Knowledge-Enabled Computing Center is expected to generate $13 million in research funding in five years and $19.5 million in ten years.  The Ohio Third Frontier program helped funding the launch of the center.

With great competitive advantage, the center touts the largest group of Semantic Web /Web 3.0 researchers in the United States to include Dr. Amit Sheth.  Dr. Sheth is the LexisNexis Ohio Eminent Scholar and listed among the top 30 most-cited computer scientists in the world.

With access to the Internet and web search engines, locating information is no longer a problem but making sense of the data is where the challenge comes in.  The new center plans to focus on moving from computing focused on data processing to productive thinking and decision making.  “In a very broad sense, economies have moved from agricultural to industrial to service to a knowledge economy,” said Dr. Sheth.  “Through the use of knowledge, we are able to create tremendous value.”

Dr. Sheth is interested in working on several applications with commercial potential by partnering with the Dayton-area technology industry.  He will be providing the luncheon keynote for the Technology Landscape: 2013 conference.  We encourage you to visit the center, meet with the staff, and learn more about this Dayton Gem!
